John was a tanner by trade and enlisted with the 4th Battalion, King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) on the 15 November 1915, his age on enlistment was 24 years, 2 months.
During his service John transferred from the infantry to the Machine Gun Corps and was posted to several different battalions, including the 1st, 6th and 8th battalions.
John was posted overseas on 27 August 1917; his army trade being listed as 1st Class Signaller. He was compulsorily transferred to the Royal Engineers and posted to the 8th Divisional Signal Company on the 21 March 1918.
John was posted as missing on 25 May 1918.
