William Dyson Coward was the son of Mary and Dyson Coward and the brother of Walter Coward.
The family were originally from Barrow-in-Furness but had moved to Ulverston and were living at 10 Bridge Street.
William was a labourer before he was recruited into the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) on 15 November 1915, he was 23 years and 7 months old.
His attestation documents show his next of kin as originally being stated as his brother Walter Coward, Army Cyclist Corps. This handwritten information was crossed out and replaced with his father, Dyson Coward, 10 Bridge Street, Ulverston.
