Husband of Dora Annie Hird of Belmont, Ulverston, Lancashire.
Charles was born in Barrow-in-Furness in 1876 and married Dora Annie Threlfall in 1902 in the Parish Church of Ulverston. Their son, Charles Henry Hird, was born on 13 February 1904.
Charles was a merchant seaman who achieved his second mate certificate in 1896, his first mate certificate in 1899 and master certificate in 1901.
He was captain of the steamship Moorlands when he died at government hospital Durban, Natal, Africa on 2nd December 1917 of Bright's disease (kidney disease).
A cross of remembrance was laid in Stellawood cemetery in Durban on 7 December 2018 by Graeme Scott, South Africa Royal British Legion standard bearer
